About Pomezia
Pomezia is a city in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region of Italy. It is a modern and urban city, but it also has some traces of its ancient past.It is located near the site of the ancient city of Lavinium, and has some archaeological attractions, such as the Area Archeologica dell’Antica Lavinium, the Santuario del Sol Indiges, and the Villa Romana.
Pomezia was founded in 1939 as a new town near the location of ancient Lavinium, on land resulting from the reclamation of the Pontine Marshes under Benito Mussolini. Its new population was extracted from the poor peasants of Romagna, Veneto and Friuli.
Pomezia was occupied by the forces of the Third Reich, and was heavily bombed during the Battle of Anzio in World War II. After the war, Pomezia developed as a strong industrial center, especially in the medical and pharmaceutical sectors, as well as a recreational center.
