About Ardea
Ardea is an ancient town and comune (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, located about 35 kilometres (22 miles) south of Rome and 4 kilometres (2 miles) from the Mediterranean coast.Ardea was founded during the 8th century BC and was the capital of the Rutuli people, as described in Virgil's Aeneid. In 509 BC, the Roman king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus unsuccessfully tried to conquer Ardea, leading to the overthrow of the monarchy and establishment of the Roman Republic. After the Roman conquest, Ardea declined and was largely abandoned after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, before experiencing a resurgence in the 9th century AD. Ardea became a frazione (subdivision) of other municipalities over the centuries before becoming an independent municipality in 1970.
