Augusta is a city in the province of Syracuse, on the east coast of Sicily. It is located on a peninsula that forms a natural harbor, and is connected to the mainland by two bridges.It has a port, which is one of the most important naval bases in Italy. It also has a castle, which was built by Frederick II and later enlarged by Charles V. It also has a cathedral, dedicated to St. Mary of the Assumption, which has a baroque facade and a bell tower. Other sights include the sanctuary of the Madonna della Scala, the fountain of the Tritons, the museum of the Risorgimento, and several churches and palaces.
Augusta was founded by the Greeks and was part of the colony of Syracuse. It was named after the Roman emperor Augustus, who rebuilt it after a devastating earthquake.
It was ruled by the Romans, who made it a military and commercial center, the Byzantines, who fortified it against the Arab invasions, the Arabs, who renamed it Balad al-Yahud (City of the Jews), the Normans, who restored the Christian faith, the Swabians, who built the castle, the Angevins, who faced a revolt by the Sicilian Vespers, the Aragonese, who improved the port, and the Bourbons, who made it a naval base. It was part of the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
