About Mileto

Mileto is a town in the province of Vibo Valentia, in Calabria. It is located on a hill, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. It is a historical and artistic town, with a rich heritage and a lively culture.

Mileto is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mileto, and has a cathedral, dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari, which is a Romanesque-Gothic building with a bell tower and a crypt. Other attractions include the castle, which was built by Roger I of Sicily and was the residence of his son Roger II, the first king of Sicily, who was born here in 1095. The castle also hosts a museum of medieval art and history.

Mileto was founded by the Greeks and was part of the colony of Locri. It was named after the Greek city of Miletus, which was located on the coast of Anatolia.

It was ruled by the Romans, who made it a municipium, the Byzantines, who made it a bishopric, the Lombards, who made it a gastaldy, the Normans, who made it a county, the Swabians, who made it a royal city, the Angevins, who made it a barony, the Aragonese, who made it a duchy, and the Bourbons, who made it a principality. It was part of the Kingdom of Naples and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
