Ardea is a municipality of 49.719 inhabitants located in the Rome province in the Italian region of Lazio in Central Italy.

It has a population density of 690pp/km² people per km² and an altitude of 37m metres above the sea level.

About Ardea

Ardea was founded during the 8th century BC and was the capital of the Rutuli people, as described in Virgil's Aeneid. In 509 BC, the Roman king Lucius Tarquinius Superbus unsuccessfully tried to conquer Ardea, leading to the overthrow of the monarchy and establishment of the Roman Republic. After the Roman conquest, Ardea declined and was largely abandoned after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, before experiencing a resurgence in the 9th century AD. Ardea became a frazione (subdivision) of other municipalities over the centuries before becoming an independent municipality in 1970.
