Scilla is a coastal town in the province of Reggio Calabria, in Calabria. It is located on a peninsula that forms a natural harbor, and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. It is a popular tourist destination, famous for its beach, its castle, and its fishing village.Scilla is also the site of the mythical Scylla, a sea monster that terrorized the sailors who passed through the Strait of Messina. According to legend, Scylla was a beautiful nymph who was transformed into a monster by the sorceress Circe. Scilla has a statue and a fountain dedicated to Scylla, as well as a museum that displays the history and the culture of the town.
Scilla was founded by the Greeks and was part of the colony of Rhegium. It was named after the Greek city of Scylla, which was located on the opposite side of the strait.
It was ruled by the Romans, who made it a naval base, the Byzantines, who fortified it against the Saracen attacks, the Normans, who built the castle, the Angevins, who faced a rebellion by the Sicilian Vespers, the Aragonese, who improved the harbor, and the Bourbons, who made it a fishing center. It was part of the Kingdom of Sicily and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
